Get ready for Trees of Care, a festive and magical community event presented by the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital Foundation.

Families can explore beautifully decorated trees sponsored by local businesses, meet Santa Claus, enjoy children’s activities, take horse-drawn sleigh rides, savour delicious refreshments, and enter raffles to win the displayed trees and prizes.

The best part? All proceeds will go towards funding vital equipment at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, helping to enhance healthcare close to home.

5K Prediction Fun Run / Walk: Sunday October 4th 2026

The 5K Prediction Fun Run / Walk is taking place on Sunday October 4th 2026!

Take part in a fun and one-of-a-kind 5K run/walk through the scenic streets of Perth, beginning and ending in beautiful Stewart Park.

Here’s what makes this event special: Instead of racing for the fastest time, participants will predict how long it will take to complete the 5K. The person who finishes closest to their predicted time wins!(No watches, phones, or timers allowed just you, your pace, and your best guess!)

All proceeds will benefit the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, enhancing access to essential healthcare in our community.

This inspiring third-party fundraiser is generously hosted by Janis Sullivan and Shannon Baillon.

New LiteGait® System Helps Patients Take Confident Steps Toward Recovery

Thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Kate Stolee and Jim Noble, the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital has recently introduced the LiteGait® body weight support system, a specialized rehabilitation device designed to assist patients in safely relearning walking and postural control. The system employs an overhead frame and harness to partially support a patient’s weight while permitting natural movement on a treadmill or over ground. By reducing the risk of falls and reducing the physical demands of the task, it enables patients to initiate walking practice earlier and with greater confidence under the close supervision of a therapist.

This body weight support system is particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from neurological injuries, such as stroke, or for those with limb loss learning to walk with a prosthesis. Therapists can adjust the level of support to allow patients to practice standing, balance, gait, and functional tasks at their own pace while minimizing fear of falling. The system provides adjustable support without moving the patient’s legs for them, so it promotes active participation and facilitates the development of strength, balance, and endurance through repeated walking practice.

The introduction of this body weight support system represents an important enhancement of our rehabilitation services, supporting patients in achieving their personal goals, whether it be to improve balance, walking, or overall function.

Because of this generosity, patients at our hospital are able to take meaningful steps forward in their recovery with greater confidence, dignity, and independence. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Kate Stolee and Jim Noble for their compassion and commitment to enhancing patient care in our community.

Debbie’s Journey of Strength, Gratitude, and Compassionate Care Close to Home

Before her passing, Debbie generously shared her story with us.

While we had planned to feature it in late April, we now share it in honour of her wishes and with heartfelt gratitude for the trust she placed in us to tell it.

Her words reflect a journey marked by strength, resilience, and deep appreciation for the care she received.

“I’ve been a long-term patient of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital due to a chronic anemia blood disorder that has evolved. I first visited the hospital on December 26, 2009, never having visited a hospital before for my own care. I was seen by Dr. Drummond where my lifelong journey began.

I started needing blood transfusions and was quickly referred by him to a hematologist. He was so kind and thorough, and I was treated with exceptional care by Nurse Nancy who has retired now. I became dependent on blood transfusions where I would visit the ER to have until the medical day clinic was opened (in memory of Dr. Drummond’s daughter).

I had to be admitted a couple of times at the hospital and had several treatments through my specialist, that would at times put me into remission for awhile until they didn’t work anymore. The most current relapse was December 2024 when I returned to visit every two weeks for transfusions until now, as I will be having a HSCT (stem cell transplant).

During my time as a regular at the hospital, I got to know many of the staff in the lab (can’t say enough about Marylouise, Phil, Graham, Diane, Kelcy) and the nurses at the med unit, past and present (Christina, Kris, Amanda, Alicia, Cheryl).

The gratitude of having care close to home and getting to know these exceptional people who provide extraordinary care is beyond words. I can just say that it makes a huge difference especially when you are so sick and have little energy to make long trips to the city, get up early to travel, and just feel disconnected at the big hospitals.

At Perth hospital, specifically my experience with the medical day clinic and its caring staff, it was like family taking care of me. It was bittersweet and some sadness when I said goodbye, although hopeful for a cure now, I will miss them, their kindness, their competency, and humanity, not to mention some very excellent topics of conversation including laughter!

Thank you is not enough! I’m so very grateful to local care at our great hospital!”

We extend our deepest condolences to Debbie’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Remembering Cathy Through Care: Lloyd Supports PSFDHF MRI Campaign

Lloyd and his late wife, Cathy (a former nurse), spent many years working in Smiths Falls. They loved the town and the people, and their experience here left a lasting impression.

In the fall of 1993, Cathy suffered a fall that required vertebrae surgery – resulting in numerous trips to Ottawa for MRI appointments. Those experiences reinforced to Lloyd just how important it is for our community to have access to advanced medical imaging close to home.

Wanting to make a difference and honour Cathy’s memory, Lloyd made a generous donation to support the PSFDH Foundation’s MRI Campaign. His gift will help ensure that patients and families in our region can access the care they need close to home – something he and Cathy understood the importance of firsthand.

From a Lump to Life-Changing Care: Jasmin’s Breast Cancer Story

At 66, Jasmin was enjoying retirement and living a healthy life.

Then, one ordinary day, she felt a lump in her breast.

“I noticed a lump in my left breast. I waited a week, thinking maybe it would go away. But something just didn’t feel right,” she remembers.

That gut feeling led Jasmin to her doctor and changed her life. Within weeks, tests revealed the news no one wants to hear: breast cancer.

On August 16, Jasmin underwent surgery preformed by Dr. Morell at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital to remove the tumor and lymph nodes. Recovery was long and difficult but when her results came back clear, she knew there was hope.

“Ringing the bell after my final radiation session on December 21st was the best Christmas present ever,” Jasmin says. “It felt so good to know… I made it.”

Today, Jasmin continues her recovery, grateful for the doctors, nurses, and technology that made her treatment possible. Most of all, she is grateful she had access to expert, compassionate care close to home.

Her message is simple: “Please don’t wait. Self-check. Go for your mammogram. Early detection saved my life.” Every donation makes a difference for patients like Jasmin, and for the countless others who will walk through our doors tomorrow.

2025 Radiothon Raises $77,005 for Local Healthcare

The 2025 Radiothon was an incredible day of community support, heartfelt stories, and generosity in support of healthcare across our region. On October 16th, listeners tuned in, shared inspiring experiences, and came together to make a meaningful difference for local hospitals and healthcare centres.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of 88.1 myFM and 93.2 WOWFM, along with the incredible generosity of our community, a total of $77,005 was raised in support of all participating organizations.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who donated, shared their stories, volunteered their time, and helped make this year’s Radiothon such a tremendous success. Your support continues to strengthen healthcare close to home and make a lasting impact throughout our community.
